Some are flat and dark, some are raised and brown and some are fleshy and skin coloured.
Moles develop from about 2 years of life until 30-40 years of age.
Moles can change slowly with age and become paler and more raised with time and this is normal.
However it is important to be extremely cautious if you notice a change in a mole as it can be a sign of a skin cancer called malignant melanoma which can be very serious.
It is important to keep an eye on your moles and to check all of your skin in front of a full length mirror every 3-4 months. A partner can help you check the moles on your back.
The signs of malignant melanoma are a new or existing mole changing in size, shape or colour and iching or bleeding.

If you are concerned about a mole – get it checked!
Dr Goldstraw can check all your moles and uses a dermatoscope which enables her to examine them in more detail. If a mole needs removing she can do this as a small surgical procedure under local anaesthetic.
